Gutter guard installation

Retire the fall ladder routine. Get guards chosen for what actually lands on your roof and fitted to the gutters you already have.

A gutter guard covers the open top of a gutter. Rain gets through or around it, while leaves and twigs stay on the surface until wind or the next rain moves them along. For Morgantown-area houses shaded by oaks, maples and other hardwoods, the right guard can stretch the time between cleanings from months to years.

How do I choose a guard?

Match it to your trees first, then to your roof.

  • Big hardwood leaves. Nearly any rigid metal guard keeps them out. Perforated aluminum is the lower-cost option.
  • Seeds, catkins and needles. Small debris passes through bigger openings and plugs downspouts. Fine stainless micro-mesh handles it best.
  • Steep, tall roofs. Water leaving a steep roof moves fast and can jump some guard designs. Ask how the quoted product performs in a heavy downpour.
  • Snow and ice. Snow sliding off a roof puts weight on the gutter edge. Ask how the guard and hangers are fastened and whether the product is rated for snow load.
  • Appearance. Low-profile mesh nearly disappears from the street. Hoods add a visible cap.

What happens during installation?

A careful crew empties the gutters, flushes each downspout and checks the slope before any guard goes on. Loose hangers get tightened or replaced and leaky corners resealed, because a guard on a bad gutter is wasted money. The guard fastens to the front lip, and the back edge either slides under the first row of shingles or screws to the fascia, depending on the product. Ask which method you're getting.

Could guards affect my roof warranty?

They can if the installer lifts, cuts or nails through shingles in ways the shingle maker doesn't allow. Dig out your roof paperwork, tell the installer the shingle brand and age, and get the mounting method in writing. Guards that attach only to the fascia avoid the shingles entirely.

How much upkeep is left?

A little. Look at the guards after the spring seed drop and again once the leaves are down in late fall. Brush or hose off anything sitting on top, and pay attention to valleys where two roof planes meet. The inside of the gutter and the downspouts, the parts that are hard to reach, should stay clear.

What changes the price of guards?

  • Product. Stainless micro-mesh costs more than perforated metal or inserts.
  • Linear feet and height. Two-story and three-story walls on a downhill side need more setup.
  • Repairs first. Re-pitching runs or replacing hangers adds time.
  • Warranty. Longer clog-free and material warranties usually cost more.

We don't quote prices. The installer prices the job after measuring each run, counting downspouts and seeing how tall and steep the roof is and how hard the lot is to ladder, so any figure you hear before that visit is only a rough starting point.

Common questions

Are gutter guards worth it in Morgantown?

If hardwoods hang over your roof and you clean gutters more than once a year, guards usually pay back in time and ladder risk. A house with no trees nearby may not need them.

Do guards hold up under snow?

Metal guards fastened to sound gutters generally do. Ask the installer how the product and hangers handle snow sliding off the roof.
